Bangkok Travel Guide
Golden temples, street-food legends, and Southeast Asia’s buzziest hub.
Bangkok is chaotic, warm and endlessly rewarding — gilded temples beside rooftop bars, $2 noodle stalls beside glossy malls. It is the gateway to Thailand and a backpacker and nomad favourite, with great value and easy onward travel across the region.

Is Bangkok safe?
General safety
Generally safe for visitors; violent crime against tourists is rare. The real risks are scams (gem shops, tuk-tuk overcharging) and traffic — agree fares up front and use metered taxis or apps.
Solo female travellers
A popular and manageable solo-female destination. Stick to well-lit main areas at night, watch your drink, and use ride-hailing apps after dark rather than unmarked taxis.
LGBTQ+ travellers
One of Asia’s most LGBTQ-friendly cities, with an open, visible scene around Silom. Thailand passed marriage equality in 2025 — broadly welcoming.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.
Top things to do in Bangkok
- Grand Palace and Wat Pho’s reclining Buddha
- Chatuchak weekend market
- Street-food crawl through Chinatown (Yaowarat)
- Long-tail boat through the canals (khlongs)
- Rooftop sundowner over the skyline
Getting around & essentials
The BTS Skytrain and MRT metro skip the infamous traffic. For the airport, the Airport Rail Link or a pre-booked transfer is cheapest and stress-free; use Grab or metered taxis elsewhere.

Plan my trip — freeBangkok FAQs
Is Bangkok safe for solo female travellers?
Yes, with sensible precautions — it is a well-trodden solo route. Use ride-hailing apps at night, keep to busy areas, and watch your drink, just as you would in any big city.
How do I avoid Bangkok scams?
Ignore anyone who tells you a temple is "closed today", agree tuk-tuk fares before getting in, and use metered taxis or the Grab app. Most scams are pushy, not dangerous.
Is the tap water safe to drink?
No — stick to bottled or filtered water. It is cheap and available everywhere.
